The airport is located near the district of Lautiosaari, east of the Kemijoki (Kemi River), 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) north of Kemi city centre and 18 kilometres (11 mi) east of Tornio city centre. The airport is owned and operated by Finavia.
Kemi Tornio Airport was opened in 1939 as a military airfield. The first commercial flights began in 1949. The airport was expanded in the 1960s and 1970s, and a new terminal was built in 1992.
